A New Home for F&ES
Since the founding of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in 1900, the School has grown from the first professional forestry program in the U.S. to a leading institution for the study of the environment. As academic programs and research initiatives have expanded, and the community of students, faculty and staff grown, F&ES activities have spread across eight buildings in the Science Hill section of the Yale campus. Plans for a new F&ES building have been in the works for over a decade in recognition of the need to bring together the different programs of the School into a new home and provide expanded, comfortable spaces for study and research.

A Building that Reflects the School’s Values
Kroon Hall will be Yale’s greenest building and a symbol of the School’s ideals and values in built form. To create this inspiration and instructional model of sustainable design, F&ES brought together the some of the world’s leading architects and engineers: Hopkins Architects, Centerbrook Architects and Planners, ARUP, Atelier Ten, and Olin Partnership. The building is currently on a path to go beyond the “Platinum” rating given by U.S. Green Building Council through their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Kroon will set a new standard for sustainable design.

The Context of Kroon
Some of the most innovative elements of the Kroon Hall project are actually outside the building. Courtyards and a primary building entrance will connect with Sachem’s Wood. An underground service node will be shared between Sage, Kroon, and Osborne Memorial Laboratories, greatly minimizing the footprint of the three buildings and keeping deliveries and maintenance behind the scenes. And Kroon Hall will serve as a cornerstone for the ambitious sustainability and green construction efforts across the Yale campus.
